A PRACTICAL INVESTIGATION OF ON-PAGE AND OFF PAGE SEACH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION TECHNIQUES IN BUILDING NETWORK TRAFFIC
1.0 Introduction
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results, or the higher it "ranks", the more searchers will visit that site. SEO can also target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines
As a marketing strategy for increasing a site's relevance, SEO considers how search algorithms work and what people search for. SEO efforts may involve a site's coding, presentation, and structure, as well as fixing problems that could prevent search engine indexing programs from fully spidering a site. Other, more noticeable efforts may include adding unique content to a site, ensuring that content is easily indexed by search engine robots, and making the site more appealing to users. Another class of techniques, known as "Black Hat" SEO or spamdexing, use methods such as link farms and keyword stuffing that tend to harm search engine user experience. Search engines look for sites that employ these techniques and may remove their listings.
There are two types of search engine optimization.
- ?Onpage Optimization
- ?Offpage Optimization
1.1 On-Page Optimization
On-Page factors are related directly to the content and structure of the website. This normally consists of pages written in the HyperText Markup Language but also applies to other document formats that are indexed by search engines, for example Microsoft Word or PDF formats. On-page optimization involves modifying keyword frequency in the URL, Title, Headings, Hypertext Links and Body text. It may also involve reducing redundant HTML codes (aka cruft) produced by Web page authoring tools and restructuring the site to produce better linked and focussed page content.
Many search engines now discount the weight given to on-page factors because they give too much scope for abuse by SEO experts. In theory the visible parts of a web-page are less prone to manipulation as they have to make sense to readers. However doorway pages with redirections and clever use of style sheets enable different content to be served to search engines and end users.
(1) Content Optimization
You should concentrate on your user and easy readability, but you always have to have an eye on the search engines as well. For users it is clear what a certain page should contain and for keywords to written in the headline, but for search engines it is better to repeat the important keywords several times. So you have to strike the right balance:
Concentrate on your users first
That is what the website is about. You don’t sell your products or services to search engines but to people. And if they don’t get what you are saying or find it hard to read through your website they very likely would hit the back button of their browser and visit your competition.
Then modify for search engines
If you got your text together go over it again and try to get some more keywords and phrases in where they fit and make sense. There is no certain amount or percentage that is best, just make sure to just use them a couple of times. The best ways to avoid using them too often are to use different words and phrases and to create some lists. Lists are always good to bring in some keywords.
(2) TITLE-Tag
<title>Website title</title>
It is displayed at the top of your browser and it is also used as the title of your website in the SERPs. Therefore you should take your time and think about the best title for your page.
Important aspects of the title-tag:
- Give every page of your website its own title and don’t use one title for the whole website
- It should contain no more than around 10-12 words.
- Think of it as a short ad copy, because that’s basically it when users see them on the SERPs.
(3) META-Tags
META-Tags are not as important any more as they used to be. That is basically because people started using them to spam search engines especially the keyword-tag was heavily used for that. Nevertheless there are still some important META-Tags you should use:
<meta name= description? content=? />
The description-tag is probably the most important META-Tag. It is displayed in the SERPs and you should select it as carefully as the title-tag.
Important aspects of the description-tag:
- Give every page of your website its own description and don’t use one description for the whole website.
- The description -tag is one of the few meta-tags that still positively influences your website’s ranking, so its good to use your most important keywords in it.
- It should contain not more than around 25-30 words.
- Think of it as a short ad copy, because that’s basically what users see on the SERPs.
<meta name=”robots” content=”" />
The robots-tag is used to tell the search engines (e.g. spiders or robots) what they shall do with your website. Possible entries are index, follow, noindex and nofollow “ whereas index/noindex tells the search engine whether to index the page or not noindex/nofollow tells them to follow the links or not.
The meta tag section of Guardian newspaper is shown below:

<META CONTENT="http://www.guardiannewsngr.com">
<link href="/css/stylesheet.css" rel="stylesheet">
</HEAD>
(4) Headlines & text decoration
Headlines shouldn’t only be used to structure your content and keep it easy to read, but also for SEO reasons. Search engines tend to give headlines between <h1></h1>¦<h3></h3> tags more relevancy - <h1> being the most relevant headline.
Everything of course with an eye on your defined keywords and phrases.
(5) TITLE- and ALT Attributes
Title- and alt - attributes are used to describe text-links and images. Its not only for search engine reasons you should use them, but also for accessibility. They are shown if you move the mouse over links and images. Besides, the alt-attribute is shown if the image isn’t (yet) loaded.
(6) Keep it up-to-date
Search engines always want new content, so feed them! Not only your website will grow automatically if you always add something to it, but also search engines tend to spider your website more often if they always find something new.

By looking at this code we can identify the following problems immediately:
- No header tags
- No keywords in meta tag
1.2 Off Page Optimization
Properly planned off page optimization will make the difference between your website ranking #900, and ranking #1 on Google.
Offpage optimization basically consists of all of the ranking factors that are NOT located on your webpage, that the search engines look at when ranking a website. These include:
Which websites link to you
- The number of websites linking to you
- The Google of the website linking to you
- The page title of the website linking to you
- The anchor text used in the link linking to you
- The number and type of links linking to the website that's linking to you.
- The number of outbound links on the website that is linking to you
- The total number of links on the website that is linking to you
- Whether or not the websites linking to you are deemed by Google as an authority website.
- The IP Address of the websites linking to you.
For example, in order to optimize a website for the keyword "weight loss stories", we need to analyze the off page optimization techniques of the top 10 ranked websites for our keyword.
Which websites link to them
In order to do this, we'll go to Google and enter the following into the search box:
link:www.diet-i.com
This will bring back a list of websites that back have a link pointing to www.diet-i.com. These are www.diet-i.com's link partners. You'll notice that Google says there are about 35 webpages linking to diet.com at the time of this report. Now that we have the list of websites, we'll need to analyze the quality of these websites in great detail.
The Number of Websites linking to them
Google shows that there are about 35 websites linking to them.
The Google Page Rank of the websites
If we click on one of the webpages listed above like ucsj.edu: we'll see that the Page Rank of this page is 3.
The page title of the website linking to them
We'll note that the page title of this webpage is "Dollar for Pound – Giving Customized Common Sense Care to Prevent Heart Attack, Stroke and Hear”
The number and type of links linking to the website that's linking to them
Next we need to find the number of webpages linking to the page linking to diet-i.com. We'll go to Google and enter: link: www.dollarsfordieting.com to see how many
webpages link to the main domain that our link is located on.
Note that Google says there are 3 webpages linking to www.dollarsfordieting.com
Whether or not the websites linking to them are deemed by Google as an authority website
The idea behind this is that Google views websites that are ranked high in the search engines AND contain lots of content AND have high Page Rank's to be authority websites.
The IP Address of the webpages linking to them.
To do this we'll need to use some type of program that will tell us the IP Address of this webpage linking to www.diet-i.com. A good tool for doing this is found on the internet.
Once we have finished with www.dollarsfordieting.com, we will want to move on to the next "link partner" on the list below, and do the exact same thing with this one. A useful software program called SEO Elite can be used for automating the processes above thereby saving time.
1.3 SEO Elite
When you launch the software, you are taken to a New Project window.
Fill the form as shown below and click OK
What SEO Elite will do is analyze ALL of the offpage ranking factors that mentioned above.
Again, these things include:
- Which websites link to them
- The number of websites linking to them
- The Google of the website linking to them
- The page title of the website linking to them
- The anchor text used in the link linking to them
- The number and type of links linking to the website that's linking to them
- The number of outbound links on the website that is linking to them
- The total number of links on the website that is linking to them
- Whether or not the websites linking to them are deemed by Google as an
- authority website.
- The IP Address of the webpage linking to them
It will show you everything they're doing to rank well and will make it extremely easy for you to duplicate on your own website.
Once is finished processing, we can click over to the report view tab as shown
below.
If we look at the IP address column, you will see lots of IP addresses.
Google favors websites that have many links located on different IP Addresses.
If you think about it, it makes sense that Google gives priority to websites that have links on many IP Addresses rather than many links all on the same IP Address. This helps eliminate the possibility of people controlling the search engines. If Google didn't look at IP Addresses, I could simply create 1 website with thousands of pages and link to another 1 of my websites from all of these pages. I would then have thousands of links pointing to my website, which would probably result in a #1 ranking...
As we scroll over, if you click the "IP Address" column heading to
sort the column, we'll notice that diet-i.com also has many links from different IP Addresses. That is also a big plus for them.
Next, we'll look at the column titled Page Rank.
If we click the Page Rank column heading, it will sort the column for us. You can immediately see that diet-i.com has 1 link from a Page Rank 5 website and several from Page rank 4 websites. This is good, in that it will raise diet-i.com's Page Rank and ultimately their ranking.
Note: When you get a website with a high Page Rank to link to your website, it will increase your page rank more than if a lower page rank website were to link to you
If we click on the column heading titled "Anchor Text", it will sort the column in descending order. You can see that the 2 words that are found the most often in diet-i.com's backlink anchor text are the words "diet" and "information".
98.5% of the overall backlinks pointing to diet-i.com contain the word "diet" and 85.6% of the backlinks contain the word "information". Also listed is the total number of links containing each of these words. This is just another way of showing you why diet-i.com is outranking their competitors.
1.4 Getting a No 1 Ranking for a Keyword
While onpage optimization is still something you should do, it's NOT what will get you high search engine rankings. It's the offpage optimization factors that will. Who links to you and how they do it.
Now that we know who links to diet-i.com (The #1 ranked website) and how they're doing it, we can begin to copy what they're doing. The goal here is to contact the websites that link to diet-i.com and copy the exact linking strategy they're using to get a #1 ranking.
We could do the one of the following:
We could go to Google and enter: link:www.diet-i.com which would give us the
list of websites that link to them.
1. Once we have that list, you could click on each website. Search their website to
- find a contact email address
- Open up your email program (Outlook or whatever email client you use)
- Write out a link request to them asking them if they would link to your website in return for you linking to their website.
2. We could use SEO Elite to do this automatically...
Open up SEO Elite
- Select Radio button 2
- Select to find link partners by domain name.
- Enter www.diet-i.com into the textbox
- Select Google from the search engine list
- Click Ok

Different Red Sox Merchandise for Baseball Fans
Red Socks merchandise is very popular among baseball fans. The Red Socks or Red Sox is the professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They are one of the strongest baseball teams, which is why they have many fans not just all over the country, but all over the world. Fortunately, there are many items and supplies that you can buy to show your support to your favorite baseball team.
You can wear these items when going to a baseball event, or you can wear them at home or while hanging out with friends. Most of these items are for daily use. You can check out the list below to know what items you can buy that bear the logo and name of the Boston Red Sox.
- The most popular item on this list is the baseball cap. Baseball caps are worn not just by baseball or sports fans; everyone wears baseball caps. A Red Sox baseball cap usually has the B logo on the center. The B stands for Boston. The color of the cap is either blue or red, the official colors of this baseball team.
- Another thing that you can buy if you are a big Red Sox fan is Red Soxtshirts. The color of the t-shirt is either dark blue or red and ‘Red Sox' is printed in the center. Sometimes, the logo, a pair of red socks, is right below the text. These t-shirts are generally in men's sizes. You can give these baseball tee shirts as gifts or you can buy them for yourself.
- Accessories like Phiten necklaces, bracelets, and watches are also great gifts for boyfriends, brothers, husbands, guy friends, or fathers. These can be worn with your Red Sox t-shirt or with your other clothes. Watches are more expensive than the rest of these items, so you may want to give a watch on a special occasion like Valentine's Day, an anniversary, a birthday, or Christmas.
- Red Sox merchandise also has novelty items like auto emblems, arm magnets, head covers, forest faces, coozies, golf towels, hat clips, ball markers, license plate frames, pennants, metal auto tags, static clings, bottle opener key chains, welcome mats, and pint glasses. You can use these at home or in your car. These also make cool gifts for guys especially when you can't think of any other gift to give them.
- It is important to know your options before making a purchase. You have to ensure that you have added everything you need to your virtual cart. You should take advantage of the discount of combined shipping that is usually offered by online sellers.
Whether you buy apparel, accessories, auto accessories, or home supplies, it is important to remember why you want to buy these Red Sox items. People buy these items because they love the Boston Red Sox, and they want to show their support to their favorite team.
