Large steel-headed TaylorMade Burner SuperFast Fairway Wood
The SuperFast fairway features the largest steel fairway wood head ever offered by TaylorMade. A new, lower center of gravity ensures higher flight and maximum distance to get you closer to the hole.
The TaylorMade Burner SuperFast fairway wood features an improved SuperFast Technology which promotes higher swing speeds, hotter ball speed, and up to 10 yards more distance than the Burner 08 fairway woods. It also features a larger, more expansive clubface that is both easier to hit and confidence inspiring. It is the largest steel-headed fairway wood that TaylorMade has produced to date.
This is definitely a "different" looking fairway wood and at first glance (via pictures) I was not sure what to expect, but in hand, the club looks edgy, modern, sharp, and begging to be hit. The crown of the club features a glossy black paint that is filled with a honeycomb type of pattern in a feint gray color. In front of the pattern (it stops about half an inch short of the face) is a red alignment aid that is actually the Burner Logo we have grown to know over the years. The shape of the head is more noticeable at setup and the back edge features a thin red outline that helps make the 3 wood appear more traditional when setting up to the ball. The sole of the club is incredibly unique compared to just about any fairway wood I have ever picked up. It features a large number that is "etched" into it and there are gradual "steps" from the back edge to the center of the club that are distinctive and were called by our testers "gills". The overall package is very different than what we have come to expect out of woods, and more specifically fairway woods, but we found it quite satisfying once we had the club in our hands.
Not to sound bombastic, or didactic, it's just that this is such a great little fairway wood, that it deserves an honest and solid review. Admittedly some of the distance can be chalked up to a longer shaft, after all, the 3 Wood is, at 43.5", the length of the old traditional driver. The 5 Wood, at 43" is the length of everyone else's 3 Wood, and the 7 Wood, at 42.5" is easily the length of most everyone else's 4 and 5 Woods. If this club did not have above average balance, and superb forgiveness--such extra length could prove to be disastrous. These fairway Metals deserve a serious look by ANYONE considering putting a new fairway metal in the bag.
Golfers' review:
I bought the TM 3W in May, 2010 and love it! I am 66 and have been playing one year and am getting up to 220-240 yards and good control with this club. This is a great club on narrow fairways because of the control and forgiveness aspects. I do have a problem using this club off the grass but that may be me and not the club. Some days I use this club more off the tee than my TM Superfast Driver which I love and get great distance with when I hit the sweet spot.
3W is a bomber! Ball takes off and just goes…I need to work on my ability to hit it off the deck better; on the range turf and off the tee it's all good. Just gotta work on hitting it off the grass during play! Great club though!
My final purchases were the 3&5 Burner Superfast & Love them. I find the 5 easiest to hit and both hit straight. When my R7 driver isn't cooperating & I have a narrow fairway to contend with the 3 comes through straight with surprising distance for a three wood. I also have the Burner Irons and Rossa Monza Spyder Putter and never sunk so many long puts. I am truly a fan of Taylormade products and highly recommend them!!
The Superfast is Super Long. Its performance is pretty astounding. All I can say as regards the fairway wood is --Awesome!

The Ping Rapture V2 fairway wood has also undergone a makeover with the internal weight pads in the sole replaced with a tungsten sole plate that constitutes a third of the head's mass. This again allows Ping to position the centre of gravity for a higher launch angle and lower spin. The head design has been made larger and shallower and you really notice this at address. The large head of the Rapture V2 fairway gives you lots of confidence and forgiveness and although the lofts are slightly higher than normal, distance and trajectory are not affected. This is because modern golf balls spin less and we found these a joy to hit and certainly the best fairway woods Ping have made to date. Our personal favourite is the 17and a half degree four wood that comes with a 3-wood length shaft as standard for that little bit of extra power.
For starters, it's fitted with 16 degrees of loft, whereas most 3-woods come in a 15-degree loft. This made it easy to get the ball airborne off the deck as well as off the tee. And if you're not that comfortable with your driver off the tee, this is certainly a decent option.
