Ryder Cup Hospitality - Golf - Ryder Cup Golf Hospitality 2010

Pavin Prepping for Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor in Whales

JONESBOROUGH – 2010 Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin took time away from both the PGA Tour and his preparations for the United States' defense of the cup the Americans won at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville two years ago to participate in the Niswonger Children's Hospital Golf Classic at The Ridges on Monday. Before joining his foursome that included hospital benefactor Scott Niswonger and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, Pavin took time to conduct an impromptu golf clinic on the practice tee for the amateur golfers who had contributed generously to participate in the tournament. Pavin also took time to talk about the upcoming Ryder Cup scheduled for October in Whales."It's been a lot of fun and a great journey and there's a lot more to do between now and October," said Pavin. "It's been a great experience and I'm looking forward to getting over there and bringing the trophy home with us."

Two years ago, captain Paul Azinger employeed a quadrant system that group personality profiles in foursomes for the event. The result was a 16 ½ to 11 ½ victory, the largest U.S. margin of victory since 1981. Pavin said at this point he's unsure of a similar grouping for Celtic Manor, mainly because the make-up of the team won't be known for about two more months.

"It really depends on who makes the team," said Pavin about what his strategy around pairings will be. "After the PGA, I'll have eight guys on the team and then I'll have couple of weeks to pick four guys for the team. Then I can work them all together and see how they are going to work together with pairings and all that."The European team is still being formed as well and could eventually include former ETSU All-American Rhys Davies, although Pavin admitted he's not paying particular attention just yet to his counterparts.

"Colin Montgomerie is going to do what he does with his team," Pavin said. "For me, I'm really focused on the USA and figuring out who to pick who to pair and how to make it all work."Pavin has some experience with Celtic Manor having played in the '09 Whales Open. He's headed over there next month for a closer inspection.

Singing star pens Ryder Cup tribute

A SINGER from Penarth with a passion for golf has written a new song for the 2010 Ryder Cup.

Martyn Joseph, an award-winning songwriter who is a member of the Glamorganshire Golf Club in Penarth, has penned a lyrical tribute to the showpiece golf tournament taking place at the Celtic Manor course in Newport this October. Penarth-born Joseph, who at 17 became the youngest ever champion at the Glamorganshire club, performed his new track ‘On this Celtic Morning' at a ceremony in Cardiff last week. The star-studded event honored golfing hero Ian Woosnam, Wales' only major golf winner, as he was enrolled into the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame.

Golf Great Paul Azinger on 'Hannity'

SEAN HANNITY, HOST: Paul Azinger is a golf superstar with 17 professional victories under his belt. As team USA's 2008 Ryder Cup captain he lead the team to its first victory over the Europeans in almost a decade. He's the author of the brand new book, "Cracking the Code: The winning Ryder Cup strategy, make it work for you".

I sat down with him earlier to discuss that and a lot more. Take a look.

HANNITY: It is such a great honor to meet you. How are you?

PAUL AZINGER, PROFESSIONAL GOLFER: Pleasure. I'm great.

HANNITY: Well, the book is really inspiring but before I get to that, I watched your career at a distance. I remember very distinctly when you got diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, it was kind of at the height of your career.

AZINGER: Yes. It was.

HANNITY: I mean there was a lot of feature stories about you at the time. When you get that diagnosis, it was in your right shoulder. You are a golfer, how tough was that for you in your life?

AZINGER: Well, it was scary. I'm just thankful it hurt. You know, cancer doesn't always hurt. And my shoulder hurt because I was playing a professional sport I was actually having it looked at and getting it treated. Dr. Frank Job (ph) who was the guy that Tommy John surgery was that one that was really concerned about it.

We did a biopsy on it and found out it was non-Hodgkin's lymphoma but it was caught early. I did 6 months of chemo, 5 weeks of radiation and that has been several years ago now.

England v France Hospitality For 2011 Six Nation Match

State of the Nation - Wales

The question regarding this team is not how far do they still have to go, it's how far can they still go before the next World Cup.Let's face facts: potential though this side has and competitive though it is, this is not a team that can go on to lift a World Cup, nor is it a team that will take a Grand Slam or Six Nations any time soon.Warren Gatland arrived in the principality with a fanfare in 2008, taking a side that had been knocked out of the World Cup by Fiji to a Grand Slam in the Six Nations.Since then, things have not been so good. Of the last fifteen games, Wales have won only five. With many of this current crop hitting full international maturity and with the World Cup one year away, you'd be hoping for a better return than this right now. They've been more consistent under Gatland, they've been better-organised, in many ways more competitive across the board. It's winning appears to be the problem.Having blown a 16-3 lead at home to a rag-tag South African team, Gatland talked before the series against New Zealand about mental strength being required to achieve the first win for Wales against the All Blacks in 57 years. That was a couple of days before his side fluffed several chances to build up a significant lead and then were caught napping twice for tries that turned the shape of the game. In the second half, mentally, the Welsh fell right off it.

Former England manager Brian Ashton to help coach Fylde

Ashton, who was sacked from his England post by the Rugby Football Union in April 2008 and replaced by current manager Martin Johnson, will assist the National Two North side in the development of their senior squad, working alongside head coach Mark Nelson.Ashton played scrum-half at the Woodlands from 1966-1973, while his illustrious coaching career also began at Fylde, before he moved on to become head coach at Bath, ahead of coaching both Ireland (1996-98) and England (2006-2008). "We are all delighted that Brian has agreed to assist us," said Nelson. "He has one of the most astute brains in rugby and we hope to use him to inspire and enthuse our players."We will be using Brian's arrival as a catalyst to change the way we play the game. I was coached by him as a young winger at the Woodlands in 1980 and I can't wait to work with him again."

Andy Powell linked to Agen move

Blues No8 Andy Powell is reported to be close to agreeing a move to French club Agen. Powell, who has been unsettled since the infamous buggygate incident which cut short his Six Nations involvement last February, had been thought to be on his way to rugby league with the Crusaders. But reports in France are now suggesting he is about to stay in the union game with Agen. Powell had a spell with Beziers six years ago and so a move across the channel will not be totally alien to him. But any transfer will have to involve the Blues being compensated as he one year left on his contract at the Cardiff City Stadium. Should that demand be met, the Blues are willing to let Powell go rather than keep a player who is unsettled.
