Quail West on the Auction Block
Quail West, a Mediterranean-style luxury golf community in Naples FL is one of the latest high-end properties facing bankruptcy and offered up for auction. Previously owned by Ginn-LA, the winning bid of $13.5 million came from QW 2009, a Southwest Florida development company.
The Quail West vision was indeed grand. The Ginn-LA developers promised an exclusive private club lifestyle with luxurious surroundings. The minute attention to detail was reflected in the landscaping that included European-style cobblestone streets, courtyards, exquisite fountains, Spanish tile roofs and detailed ironwork. The exceptional amenities catered to members every whim and included use of a private wine cellar, private concierge and in-home catering.
Unfortunately, when these grandiose plans collided with a failing economy, they resulted in a multi- million dollar loss. The recent sale included 262 undeveloped homesites, two golf courses, a clubhouse and sales center. Thankfully, John McGarvey, developer and one of the principal owners, believes there is a future in luxury golf real estate. "The auction was a rare opportunity to purchase quality lots in the Naples area, which are getting harder to find", McGarvey said.
For the most part, the two courses, clubhouse and restaurants have remained open throughout the Chapter 7 filing, but it has taken a toll on the number of new members. None of the services have been cut back and there are about 180 active employees still remain. Hopefully, now with the sale out of the way, public confidence will improve in Quail West. In addition, there is talk of a promotion that will temporarily waive the $175,000 membership fee and offers a trial membership for the cost of "dues only".
Quail West Amenities include:
- State-of-the-art tennis complex with red-clay hydro-grid courts.
- World-class spa, men's and women's whirlpool baths and steam room, fitness center with an extensive list of classes and members programs.
- Outdoor pool
- Recently updated 70,000 square foot clubhouse that includes:
- Wine Room - that even includes a reserved area to store members private collections.
- Dining: indoor-outdoor bar overlooking the 18th hole of the Preserve course and formal restaurant.
- Gathering areas for playing cards.
- Golf and tennis pro shops
- Locker rooms
- Future plans were in the works for a club expansion and creation of a Riviera-style beach club.
36-hole Arthur Hills designed courses include:
The Preserve: 150 acres of forest and natural beauty provide natural hazards and challenges for the most skilled golfer in this 18-hole course.
Lakes: An 18-hole course in a natural setting provides gorgeous views with winding fairways through acres of lakes, marshes and waterways.
Members also benefit from a premier practice facility and professional instruction.
Quail West Homes:
Finished home prices range from $2.2 million to over $10 million. These are exceptional custom homes, reflecting the style and exclusivity of this golf community. A current model home available for viewing measures 8,347 square feet, has four bedrooms, oversized lanai, and every extra you can imagine including a temperature-controlled wine room. It comes fully furnished and is listed at $4,885,000..
Six beach lots off of Hickory Boulevard in Bonita Springs were also up for sale. These were initially destined to be part of the Quail West Beach Club slated for future development.

How to enjoy some of the finest courses in the world in luxury conditions and save money as well
Do you like a challenge? Do you want to tame championship courses?
There are many championship courses around the world, from 18 to 36 hole. Some have been designed by champion golfers such as Nick Faldo. Each offers its own particular challenges which, of course, is what makes golf such a fascinating game.
Travelling to these courses is, naturally, not difficult but the costs of doing so and staying in suitable accommodation may make it prohibitive, especially if you are having to take the present economic situation into account.
Recently, a form of Club has changed the way they gathered new members for a wide range of luxury holidays around the world. Instead of personal invitations to special high pressure presentations in hotels to offer their resources, membership is now being offered direct, still by word of mouth but without the geographical restriction and without the pressure.
Acommodation is in 4 and 5 star luxury apartments and villas, mostly on a self catering holiday. This means that you can arrange your game whenever it suits you and not to conform to laid down schedule of meals and other activities.
The accommodation usually comprises 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms, lounge, dining area, fully fitted kitchen, often a balcony, , etc. Apartments are typically in Marriott or Sheraton Hotels or similar. All will offer extensive facilities apart from Golf, so members of families who do not play can still enjoy a wonderful holiday.
Typical will be the GreenLinks Golf Resort in Florida. It's the only luxury hotel condominium resort located right on the fairway in Naples, Florida, featuring 36 holes of championship golf. Their luxurious suites offer you all the comforts of home and more.
You can relax in their heated pool and Jacuzzi bask in the sun on their expanded sun deck or improve your tennis game on one of their private courts.
Downtown Naples and Marco Island are each about 10 minutes away, and both offer world class boating, fishing, shopping, and miles of white sandy beaches. Spa services at The Players Club, located within walking distance, are also available.
Some resorts do offer an all inclusive holiday where, for a reasonable daily charge, all food, drinks, facilities, etc. are provided. This can be a good way to control expenditure, perhaps important in these times.
Many of the properties are actually Time Share but there is no annual maintenance charge and instead of being limited to a single location you will have a choice of over 5000 in many different countries.
Cost of joining this Club is far less than buying a Time Share and, as we indicate, far more flexible. You will be able to recover the cost of membership within two or three weeks holidays. From then on you will be saving.
An unusual aspect of membership is that it can be used by other family members and also friends. It can even be bequeathed to your heirs, so it is not time limited.
Prices will vary according to size, quality and location but will be a maximum of $799 for one week. That is for the villa or apartment, not per person. Although the minimum is $298, there are often special last minute bargains from an incredible $99.
The normal prices through Travel Agents would be in the range of $1500 to $3000. Savings of well over $1000 for a week are commonplace.
