If you are a newcomer to golf or even just thinking about taking up the game then you are probably not sure where to start. I strongly believe that the easiest and best way to take up golf is to join a golf club and enmesh yourself within it.
Golf can be a difficult game to pick up on your own. Even if someone introduces you to golf and decides to become your "trainer" you had better check their credentials before you pick up their bad habits. There are many golfers out there who are only to keen to give you advice. Advice on which club to take, how to grip the club, how to address the ball, how to swing the club, how to aim, you name they will want to give you advice. However, you need to check how good they actually are. Many golfers here tips at the bar and it is these tips that are being told to you as a newcomer and as a newcomer in case you are not careful you will end up with so many tips and many of them which are complete nonsense that you can put your game back months.
That is why I tell you to join a golf club. Most golf clubs have a resident professional with their on site golf shop. These people are professionals and the advice they will give you will save you much heartache over the years. They can advise you on club selection if you have not already bought clubs. If you already have clubs they can check that they are properly set up for you and if not they can carry out any adjustments required. Professionals will also offer lessons, usually as half an hour or an hour time-scale. If you buy a batch of lessons you will most likely get a discount. During the lesson the professional will be able to teach you the correct grip, how to address the club and how to complete your swing. By starting out with professional lessons you will learn correctly from the start. If you were learning to fly a plane you would check that your instructor was qualified to teach you and not just select someone from the bar to teach you how to fly. Treat golf as learning to fly, get the correct training up front. The other plus of joining a golf club is the camaraderie If you are going out for a game of golf you will find there will always be fellow golfers who will join you for your 18 holes. Most people enjoy the social side of golf and playing a round with a fellow golf enthusiast should be a pleasurable experience.
Once you have learnt the basics you will recognise the good golfers who can help you with your game. To be honest some of the best advice I have ever had on a golf course is from two sons who are both category 1 golfers. They understand better that I do my level of ability on the golf course and when they see me trying to hit a Phil Mickelson wonder shot they are quick to bring course management to my mind and advise me on what is probably a more suitable shot for each situation.
Join a club, get some professional training and go out there and enjoy what must be the best game on the planet.
