Without a doubt, the experts all agree that the very best time to exercise is...
Whenever you WILL exercise. In other words, if you are inclined to find time to workout at one time over other times...wouldn't it make more sense that you will be apt to get in more workouts at that time? Right. It does make sense to increase the likelihood that you will get the exercise done if you schedule advantageously.
However, if you had options and wanted to base your preference on the most beneficial time possible...what time would that be?
The answer is undoubtedly, the EARLIER in the day the better.
"What if I am not a morning person," you say.
Chances are that you don't consider yourself a morning person for a variety of reasons that are all within your own control. Think about this. You can control the following factors, which will optimize your abilities to be a morning person.
The time you go to bed and get up determines how well rested you are when you get up in the morning.
Say you just can't get to sleep any earlier?
Perhaps there are a few things to consider in helping you get to sleep and stay asleep. Bright light, loud noise, heavy food and drink, as well as, regular routine can factor heavily on your ability to be a morning person.
Okay, so you are still waiting for me to tell you the WHY and HOW of exercise benefit early in the day.
Think of it this way. When you exercise you are boosting your metabolism to rev at a higher rate for a period of time long after you complete the workout. If you exercise too late in the day, this can be a problem. You will still be wondering why you can't get to sleep at night. More importantly, you have fat storage you want to metabolically melt down while you are sitting at your desk or driving your car. Right? This is the magic pill you were hoping to find.
That's right. Early morning exercise IS the magic weight loss pill you need to lose weight. Not only that, but it is also key that the weight you lose will be fat loss. You want to lose fat and maintain your muscle tone, right? Go on a crash weight loss program just to lose weight without exercising and you can be left with some sagging skin. So, workout to lose weight the right way.
The best type of exercise to accomplish the metabolic boost, will be the kind that makes you get out of breath. Oprah's trainer was right. Don't be fooled by the old style "fat-burning" zone theory, because common sense will tell you the same thing the exercise scientists say. If you aren't working hard enough to flunk the "talk test", then you aren't going to get the afterburn effect.
Sure, you can go by the readouts on the cardio machines at the health club to convince yourself otherwise. Yeah, you are burning some calories while you are on the machine. That is a very limited period of time.
Therefore, you would rather have the afterburn effect of metabolic boosting for hours after the workout is finished. You burn more stored fat AFTER the workout this way, than you do while you are watching CNN on the treadmill or chatting up someone nearby.
If you can carry on a conversation, you aren't training hard enough. It is that pure and simple. Work hard, burn fat, sleep well, and get up early to do more of the same. Then take a lot of pictures of yourself at the reunion standing next to those who don't know your secret.
